Sewer Shark: A Surprisingly Fun FMV Shooter
Released in 1992 for the Sega CD, Sewer Shark is an FMV-based shooter that was one of the first games released for the add-on. It’s a unique and enjoyable experience, despite its flaws.
Gameplay
Sewer Shark is a rail shooter in which the player controls a crosshair on the screen and shoots targets. The game is played from a first-person perspective, and the player can move the crosshair around the screen to aim at enemies. The player can also choose to change directions at fixed points in the game.
The game’s main attraction is its story. In the year 2000, people have been forced to move underground and live in tunnels due to overpopulation and pollution. Unfortunately, these tunnels are infested with mutated rat/alligator creatures known as “ratigators.” The player takes on the role of a pilot of a Sewer Shark, a craft designed to navigate the sewers and rid them of ratigators.
The player must clear out enough ratigators to win a one-way trip to Solar City and sunny beaches. The game is divided into several levels, each with its own unique set of challenges. The player must defeat all of the ratigators in each level in order to progress.
Graphics
Sewer Shark uses FMV (full motion video) to create its graphics. This was a relatively new technology at the time, and it allowed the game to have more realistic graphics than most other games released for the Sega CD. The FMV sequences are well-done and help to create a sense of atmosphere and immersion.
However, the FMV also has some drawbacks. The video is often pixelated and blurry, and it can be difficult to see the enemies at times. Additionally, the FMV sequences can be quite long, and they can interrupt the flow of the game.
Sound
The sound in Sewer Shark is good, but not great. The music is forgettable, and the sound effects are repetitive. However, the voice acting is surprisingly good, and it helps to bring the characters to life.
Story
The story in Sewer Shark is simple but effective. The player is tasked with clearing out the sewers of ratigators, and they must do so in order to win a one-way trip to Solar City. The story is told through FMV cutscenes, and it is well-written and engaging.
Overall
Sewer Shark is a fun and unique FMV shooter. It has some flaws, but its solid gameplay, interesting story, and good voice acting make it worth checking out. If you’re a fan of FMV games or rail shooters, then you should definitely give Sewer Shark a try.
