Destiny: Rise of Iron Review

Destiny: Rise of Iron is the fourth and final expansion for the Destiny universe. It was released on September 20, 2016, and is available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Rise of Iron features an all-new cinematic story campaign set within The Plaguelands, a brand new location on Earth. Under the command of Lord Saladin, players will face a new faction of Fallen Devils, the Splicers, while unraveling the mystery of the Iron Lords.

Rise of Iron also features a wealth of new weapons, armor, and gear, as well as a new cooperative three-player Strike, a new mode and maps for the Crucible competitive multiplayer, and an all-new six-player cooperative Raid.

Story

The story of Rise of Iron begins with the Guardians being summoned to The Plaguelands by Lord Saladin. The Plaguelands is a desolate wasteland that was once home to the Iron Lords, a legendary group of Guardians who fought back against the Darkness during the Collapse. However, the Iron Lords were wiped out by the Splicers, a new faction of Fallen Devils who have been corrupted by SIVA, a deadly nanotechnology.

The Guardians must team up with Lord Saladin and the remaining Iron Lords to stop the Splicers and prevent them from unleashing SIVA upon the world. The story of Rise of Iron is engaging and well-written, and it does a great job of fleshing out the lore of the Destiny universe.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Rise of Iron is very similar to that of the base game. Players will explore new areas, complete missions, and fight enemies. However, Rise of Iron also introduces some new gameplay mechanics, such as the new Subclasses for each class.

The new Subclasses are:

  • Arcstrider (Hunter): A fast and agile Subclass that focuses on close-quarters combat.
  • Sentinel (Titan): A defensive Subclass that can create a Ward of Dawn to protect allies and buff their weapons.
  • Dawnblade (Warlock): A ranged Subclass that can use a new Solar Sword to attack enemies.

The new Subclasses add a lot of variety to the gameplay, and they allow players to customize their characters to their own playstyles.

New Content

Rise of Iron also features a wealth of new content, including:

  • New Story Campaign: The new story campaign is set in The Plaguelands and features new missions, bosses, and characters.
  • New Strike: The new Strike is called The Wretched Eye and it takes place in a massive SIVA manufacturing facility.
  • New Crucible Mode: The new Crucible mode is called Supremacy and it is a 6v6 objective-based mode where players must collect crests from fallen enemies.
  • New Crucible Maps: There are two new Crucible maps in Rise of Iron: The Fortress and The Iron Temple.
  • New Raid: The new Raid is called Wrath of the Machine and it is a six-player cooperative Raid that takes place in a SIVA-infested facility.

The new content in Rise of Iron is all high-quality and it adds a lot of replayability to the game.

Overall

Destiny: Rise of Iron is an excellent expansion that adds a ton of new content to the game. The new story campaign is engaging, the new Strikes and Crucible maps are fun, and the new Raid is a blast. If you’re a fan of Destiny, you’ll definitely want to check out Rise of Iron.
