Summary

Unit 13: A Tactical Shooter That Delivers

Released in 2012, Unit 13 is a third-person tactical shooter game developed by Zipper Interactive and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation Vita. The game puts players in control of a four-person squad of elite soldiers as they fight their way through a variety of missions in a near-future setting.

Gameplay

Unit 13 plays much like the SOCOM franchise, with a focus on realistic gameplay and teamwork. The camera stays directly behind the player character in third-person, or otherwise shifts to first person aim if the player selects the option to zoom in with guns that have the compatible attachments. Objectives can be completed in any order in each mission, with some missions allowing taking any approach to accomplish a goal (Direct Action) while others have certain conditions, such as requiring stealth.

All missions can be played co-operatively, and each mission features an unlockable “Dynamic” Mode, which changes objectives and objective locations, enemy weapons and locations, to random values and points in the environment. This adds a great deal of replayability to the game, as players can never be quite sure what to expect.

Setting

Unit 13 is set in a near-future where the world is on the brink of collapse. Terrorist organizations have become increasingly powerful, and governments are struggling to maintain control. In this chaotic world, a new breed of soldier has emerged: the Tier 1 Operator. These highly trained and skilled soldiers are the only ones who can hope to stop the terrorists and save the world.

Characters

The player takes control of a four-person squad of Tier 1 Operators, each with their own unique skills and abilities. The squad consists of:

  • Captain Jack Mitchell: The leader of the squad, Mitchell is a highly experienced and skilled soldier. He is proficient in all weapons and tactics, and he is always willing to put his life on the line for his team.
  • Sergeant Marcus Cole: The squad’s weapons specialist, Cole is an expert marksman and demolitions expert. He is also a skilled close-quarters combatant.
  • Corporal Amir Kaffarov: The squad’s stealth specialist, Kaffarov is a master of infiltration and assassination. He is also a skilled hand-to-hand combatant.
  • Corporal Kendra Daniels: The squad’s medic, Daniels is a skilled healer and support specialist. She is also a proficient sniper.

Story

The story of Unit 13 follows the squad as they are sent on a series of missions to stop a terrorist organization known as the Serpent’s Tooth. The Serpent’s Tooth is planning a series of attacks that could plunge the world into chaos, and it is up to Unit 13 to stop them.

As the squad progresses through the game, they will learn more about the Serpent’s Tooth and their plans. They will also face increasingly difficult challenges, but they will always have each other’s backs.

Reception

Unit 13 received generally positive reviews from critics. The game was praised for its realistic gameplay, challenging missions, and co-operative multiplayer. However, some critics found the game to be too short and repetitive.

Overall, Unit 13 is a solid tactical shooter that delivers a lot of fun and challenge. The game’s realistic gameplay, challenging missions, and co-operative multiplayer make it a great choice for fans of the genre.
