“World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria” is the fourth expansion set for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft. Released on September 25, 2012, this expansion takes players on an epic journey to the long-lost land of Pandaria, a continent shrouded in dense mist and rich in secrets.

The game is set after the cataclysmic events involving Deathwing, a formidable black dragon. The major setting is the titular land of Pandaria, one of the continents of the world of Azeroth. The discovery of Pandaria is made after a naval battle between the Horde and the Alliance.

The expansion raised the existing level cap from level 85 to 90 and introduced a new character class, the monk, along with a new playable race, the pandaren, which are humanoid pandas. The vanity pet system was overhauled, and a pet battle system was added. Scenarios were introduced, and Challenge Modes were added for dungeons. The existing talent trees were replaced by a new system of tiered talents awarded every 15 levels.

The monk class has three specializations: Brewmaster (tanking), Windwalker (melee damage), and Mistweaver (healing). Monks’ healing specialization is capable of healing allies through dealing damage to enemies, as well as through “proximity” based heals, and by dropping statues, similar to a shaman totem, that pulse healing as they perform attacks on the enemy target.

The pandaren—a race of anthropomorphic giant pandas initially created by veteran Blizzard artist Samwise Didier as an April Fools style joke—were later reintroduced to the Warcraft canon in the bonus Horde campaign of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

The Horde and Alliance forces discovered Pandaria, landing in the Jade Forest. Both factions mobilized local allies (the Horde made pacts with the Hozen, the Alliance joined forces with the Pearlfin Jinyu) and waged a proxy battle through these cat’s paws. The result was the destruction of the Jade Serpent’s next incarnation and the release of the Sha of Doubt, leading to the Sha infestation of the Temple of the Jade Serpent.

Both factions pushed onward into Kun-Lai Summit, where they fought the yaungol and set up base camps, converting local pandaren to their cause. They did not actually join in battle at this time. Scouts and agents of the Horde and Alliance penetrated deeper into the continent, in time exploring the Townlong Steppes and Dread Wastes.

In time these advance forces even managed to convince the August Celestials to allow both the Horde and Alliance to set up bases within the sacred Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Both the Horde and Alliance made large-scale military bases in the Krasarang Wilds and began using these to wage resource war against one another, fighting over territory and raw materials as well as ancient mogu artifacts buried below the surface of the wilds.

This period of hostilities led to a culmination wherein Warchief Garrosh Hellscream attempted to use a mogu artifact, the Divine Bell, to infuse his own soldiers with the power of the Sha. The fallout from this action caused the neutral Kirin Tor to eject the Sunreaver pro-Horde faction from Dalaran and declare themselves for the Alliance under their leader, Lady Jaina Proudmoore.

“Mists of Pandaria” is a testament to Blizzard’s commitment to creating immersive, engaging content for its player base. With its rich lore, new gameplay mechanics, and the introduction of the pandaren race and monk class, it offers a fresh, exciting experience for both new and veteran players alike.


Key figures include the Pandaren, a playable race with a deep connection to the land and its spirits; the Monk, a versatile new class; and major lore characters like Chen Stormstout, who guides players through their journey in Pandaria.
