But if you grew up memorizing jumps in Donkey Kong Country and still have a soft spot for secrets tucked behind false walls, Etherian is one of 2024’s sweetest surprises.

It’s familiar “restore the McGuffins” fare, but developer Lunarbloom Studios wrings genuine mystery out of fragmented journal entries, cave paintings, and NPCs who speak only in pictographs. By the end I still had questions—Who built the Obelisks? Why does the Surveyor’s cloak regenerate?—but the ambiguity feels intentional, not unfinished. Think Hyper Light Drifter: mood first, answers optional.

    Etherian’s secret sauce is mid-air momentum. You can double-jump, wall-grab, and air-dash, but every maneuver preserves velocity. Mastering the “float” (holding jump to glide) and the “snap” (tapping jump for a high, short hop) turns the Surveyor into a hummingbird. Within an hour I was chaining wall-jumps into dash-stalls into ground-pounds, and the game kept adding toys: a grappling hook that recharges only when you touch solid ground, a bubble shield that freezes your momentum, and my favorite—an air-slam that flips gravity for 1.5 seconds. Each biome introduces one new mechanic, wrings it dry, then hands you a twist in the boss gauntlet. By the final desert level I was surfing sand-geysers, air-dashing through sandworm ribs, and grappling onto tumbleweed husks to avoid poison cacti. It’s the rare platformer where every obstacle has multiple valid solutions; speed-runners will already be salivating.

Optional “Shard Challenges” crank the ruthlessness to Celeste B-side levels but stash permanent upgrades (extra air-dash, faster climb) that make the main route easier. It’s a smart risk-reward loop: casual players can finish the story with modest pain, while masochists can chase 100% completion and shave whole minutes off speed-runs.

Even so, I booted it up the morning after credits to hunt the last eight Shards, not because I had to, but because swooping through these floating islands feels like flying. Sometimes that’s enough.
